Day 1 (July 4): On The Road

Total Driving Distance: 802.2 miles
States Traveled: Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri
Main Activity: Driving

First, I want to say that our hearts are with the family of Steve McNair and that what happened to him was a horrible tragedy. He was my favorite player growing up and it was a total shock to me what happened. Please keep his family in your thoughts.

Our first day on the road was long but exciting. We left Powder Springs, GA around 7:15am and drove about thirteen hours to Oak Grove, MO, just outside Kansas City. Here is what day one primarily consisted of:

We began a coffee tally of how many cups of coffee each of us have had and I think it will be pretty astonishing by the end of the trip how much coffee we have consumed (the score is tied 3-3). Other than that, there are not too many other highlights from yesterday. We stopped for about an hour in Kingdom City, Missouri, to stretch our legs, look at redneck stores, and play lotto scratch-offs (Liz won $17!). After that, we drove about three hours towards Kansas City. Missouri has been dark and overcast almost the entire time we have been in it. The only really interesting driving yesterday was through Tennessee and then through St. Louis, where I got lost and drove past the Arch three different times. Oh yeah, and the end of the day was cool. As we drove towards Kansas City, all around us there were fireworks going off from dozens of small towns of the interstate, which made our night : )

We ended up staying in a nice KOA in the sleepy little town of Oak Grove, Missouri. It is mostly farmland here but the people are nice, especially at the Waffle House where we ate last night (it was one that still lets people smoke inside!). Today we are headed to Badlands National Park, South Dakota!
